- Shaiḵẖ Qalandar Baḵẖsh Jurʾat, whose proper name was Yaḥyā Amān, was the son of Ḥāfiz̤
Amān of Delhi. His ancestors received the title Amān from the Mug̲h̲al Emperor Jalāl-ud-Dīn
Akbar. One of them, Rāʾè Amān was slain at the sack of Delhi by Nādir Shāh in 1739
A. D., and the street in which he lived is still called Kūcha Rāʾè Amān (Raḥmān) after
him.
Jurʾat apppears to have left his native city when still young and took service under Nawāb Maḥabbat Ḵẖān, son of Ḥāfiz̤ Raḥmat Ḵẖān of Bareilly. In 1215 A. H./1800 A. D., Jurʾat came over to Lucknow and enjoyed the patronage of Mirzā Sulaimān Shikoh, son of the Emperor Shāh ʿĀlam, and died in that city in 1225 A. H./1810 A. D.
Jurʾat was the favourite pupil of Mirzā Jaʿfar ʿAlī Ḥasrat, and was skilled in music and astrology, but had unfortunately lost his eye-sight at a young age due to an attack of small-pox. A mas̤nawī, در هجو آزار چیچک, was most probably composed by him at that time, which is recorded in the present work on pp. 772-782.
This Ms. of Kullīyāt-e-Jurʾat was transcribed by Haidar ʿAlī for the perusal of Mr. Hamilton Henry Boileau in 1225 A. H. It is written in clear Nastaʿlīq and contains mostly G̲h̲azals arranged in alphabetical order (p. 1-608); then follow Rubāʿīyāt (pp. 608-639), Tarjīʿ-band (pp. 640-648), Musaddas and Muḵẖammas (pp. 648-688), Mas̤nawīs (pp. 688-831) and Tārīḵẖāt (pp. 831-835).
There are three seals, two on the fly-leaf and one at the end, bearing the name of H. Henry Boileau (Bailo?) and the date 1223 A. H./1808 A. D.:
اسعد الله عمدة الملک سرفراز خاں ہملٹن ہنری بایلو صمصام جنگ بہادر ۱۸۱۸ سنه ء
There are two autographs of Thomas Roebuck – an examiner of the Hindustānī language and Secretary at the College of Fort William on the fly-leaf, which are dated 1st January, 1814, Calcutta.
